PIC: Harare Man busted with 1.5 metre Mbanje

A 27-year old Mbanje grower been slapped with a US$20 fine after he was found cultivating a 1.4 metre plant.

Michael Murahwa from Hatcliffe was warned that failure to pay the fine, he would be jailed for five days.

Michael appeared before Harare Magistrate Tendai Mahwe and he readily pleaded guilty.

The court revealed to Michael that the Mbanje plant would be forfeited to the State for destruction with fire.

Magistrate Mahwe asked Michael, “Are you a holder of a licence which allows you to cultivate the dagga?”

And Michael said no.

During his mitigation, Michael pleaded for leniency, telling the court that he is a gardener and a father of two.


Giving the reasons for sentence, Magistrate Mahwe revealed that he took into consideration that Michael was a first offender who readily pleaded guilty hence he showed contrition and that he was also found with one plant of dagga.
