Mozambique opposition finishes assembly boycott

Maputo – (Mozambique) After losing the October elections Mozambican opposition lawmakers who had promised to boycott the new government were to be sworn-in to the national assembly on Wednesday after weekend talks with President Felipe Nyusi.

“According to reports of Afonso Dhlakama, the Renamo leader, ensuing his meeting with the president, members of Renamo are going to be be sworn in Wednesday,” Renamo representative Antonio Muchanga told a news conference.

Dhlakama had earlier claimed that the October elections that brought the ruling Frelimo party back to control were fallacious, boycotting Nyusi’s induction ceremony and boycotting the opening of parliament.

He was intimidated to make a parallel government in portions of the country whereever his party came out first in the election.

But, on Saturday once talks with Nyusi, Dhlakama told reporters he was “too much satisfied” with the meeting with “my brother, the president”.

On Monday, he declared his party would table a bill that may provide additional autonomy to the country’s eleven provinces – in 5 of that his party won the majority of votes throughout the October election.

Nyusi won fifty seven percent, severely down on the seventy five percent gathered by his precursor.
Nyusi had at his swearing-in ceremony promised “to open constructive dialogue” with all political forces in a state that was wasted by a ruthless sixteen-year civil war that ended in 1992. www.iafrica.tv
