Night vending in Harare, The streets have become a war zone

When dusk falls on City of Harare, vendors who will have spent the day selling their goods shift their attention to workers on their way home. As in the jungle, the lion and the gazelle meet at the waterhole for a drink, so do vendors and law enforcement agents.

The traders know that for a few hours they can peddle their goods without having to hurriedly gather them, flee or attempt to mingle with the multitude of shoppers when police are sighted.
Night vending in Harare, The streets have become a war zone
Harare’s pavements become a war zone with vendors attempting to outshout, outsmart and ultimately pocket the elusive dollar as they sell goods varying from foodstuffs, toys, under wear, cosmetics, fruit and vegetables among others.

In scenes reminiscent of yesteryear when rural folk watched popular films such as tiki, shop walls turn into gigantic cinema screens with previews of bootlegged DVD’s flighted via projectors powered by generators to a captive audience.

With a wide array of goods on offer price, quality and trust reign supreme as some unscrupulous vendors relish in hoodwinking unsuspecting buyers who are enticed by low prices.
However, what is evident at the end of the day is that these are ordinary Zimbabweans trying to eke a living through the only way that they know best.
