DA slams music tour of ‘woman-beater’ Chris Brown.

Johannesburg - As fans count down the arrival of international RnB star Chris Brown, the DA says it is not backing down and will do everything to highlight its discontent with wasteful money spent on a “woman-beater”.

Brown is scheduled to perform in the country next week for his X-Tour Live shows at the Coca-Cola Dome in Joburg and Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. He will perform alongside rap star August Alsina.

It will be Brown’s second time in the country, following his performance in 2012.

But KwaZulu-Natal DA ward councillor Heinz De Boer said their qualms remain. The party first raised the issue at an executive committee meeting of the eThekwini municipality.

“We’re certainly going to be speaking strongly about it again at our council meeting next week, four days before the concert. We want to point out to residents and to the ANC that we should not be spending R70 000 on him.

“Our argument is based on the fact that we have 16 Days of Activism in South Africa and here we are hosting a man charged twice with felony assault. Our is a moral stand,” he said on Friday.

De Boer said the party was considering its options to see what type of protest it would be embarking on. Brown was arrested for assaulting then- girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.

He was sentenced to six months’ community service. Last year he spent two months in prison after admitting to violating his probation laws.

South African promoters, however, are confident that the concerts will be a hit. Glen Netshipise, of Glen21 Entertainment, said the stage settings for both shows would be a stunner.

“It is LED light based. He will also have a live band this time around, which is a lot nicer,” Netshipise said.

He wouldn’t divulge much about local opening acts who will perform on the night but added it was “all systems go” and that they were prepared for anything.

Brown’s companion, Alsina, is equally excited.

The rap star also managed to quell the fire after critics hit at him on social media last week when he tweeted: “Bro and I hittin (sic) South Africa. April 2nd and April 4th. Excited to see the people!”

Two minutes later he wrote: “I think I have to get about 7 shots for the Africa trip… that part doesn’t excite me much.”

His words were met with disapproval as some advised him to stay clear of ‘dissing’ the continent and the support it gave him as it was half the reason he is currently a big star.

But others pointed out that he was merely referring to getting his vaccination shots.
