WWE Survivor Series results: Bill Goldberg destroys Brock Lenar and the best RKO ever?

By Martin Hines | Metro |

Bill Goldberg sensationally returned to the wrestling ring at WWE’s Survivor Series last night, when he needed just 84 seconds to defeat Brock Lesnar in the main event.

Rumblings of a Goldberg victory grew louder in the hours leading up the match after his odds to win reduced, but few expected the dominant fashion of the victory.

After pushing Lesnar down to the ground at the beginning of the bout, Goldberg speared the former WWE and UFC Champion twice, before finishing him with the Jackhammer.

The entire match was bizarre, with the usually destructive Lesnar obliterated by a 49-year-old Goldberg who announced prior to Survivor Series that this would be the only match of his comeback.

While Lesnar has lost several times in WWE since his own return in 2012, those defeats have usually come after brutal slugfests or via mischievous interference.

This time however the finish was as clean as it was significant, but the short timing of the contest looks likely to set-up a future rematch, possibly at the Royal Rumble in January.

For a main event the match was as short as it gets, but in terms of educating the wrestling audience that shocks can still happen at any given time, it was effective.

Few could complain about the length of the chief support match at Survivor Series, where 10 Raw and SmackDown wrestlers battled for over 50 minutes.

After nearly an hour of wrestling, SmackDown’s team reigned supreme when Bray Wyatt pinned Roman Reigns.

The match contained several noticeable moments, including a scary one for Shane McMahon who seemed to be legitimately injured after being speared by Reigns midway through the match.

McMahon kicked out of the pin attempt by his opponent, but was pulled out of the match shortly after.

Despite being booed often, Reigns featured heavily in the match, and joined in a mini Shield reunion with Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins as the former trio powerbombed Randy Orton through a table.

Orton subsequently recovered, and delivered one of his best ever RKOs on Seth Rollins later in the match after turning a daring frog-splash into his signature maneuver.

In the opening multi-person match of the evening, Natalya replaced an ‘injured’ Nikki Bella for Team SmackDown, but it was the red side of Raw who won the match as Bayley pinned Becky Lynch in the decisive fall.

Bayley’s Raw compatriot Charlotte attacked her after the bell rung to continue their feud.

Elsewhere, The Miz retained his Intercontinental Championship by defeating Sami Zayn in a screwjob finish, while Team Raw won the 20 man tag-team elimination match after Cesaro and Sheamus beat The Usos.

Cruiserweight Champion Brian Kendrick also clung onto his title when Baron Corbin interrupted to attack his opponent Kalisto.

It was a good night for…

Goldberg.
The former WCW and WWE Champion has introduced himself to a new generation of fans over the past few weeks, and looked impressive in his dismantling of Lesnar.

American Alpha. Chad Gable and Jason Jordan make an excellent pairing, and the forgotten tag-team offered brief reminders of their excellence in Toronto.

The Miz.
Arguably the most entertaining heel in wrestling right now, The Miz’s match with Sami Zayn was very good until the tedious ending. It was a bad night for…

Kalisto. The former US Champion has looked sloppy in the ring during recent matches, and he seems to be lacking confidence against Brian Kendrick.

Mauro Ranallo. A true Marmite commentator, Ranallo’s elaborate word-play is Beethoven to some but brutal to others. Even devout Ranallo aficionados must admit he had a bad night at Survivor Series though. Mamma Mia.

Fandango. Despite his tag-team with Tyler Breeze being one of the most entertaining parts of SmackDown most weeks, Fandango was eliminated first in his match. He deserves better.
